WHAT IS A FRANNA CRANE?

Before hiring any crane, understanding which one is best for your project is essential, especially when there are multiple cranes with different purposes. A Franna crane is one of the most popular types of cranes used in the Australian civil and construction industry because it offers a similar capacity to tractor cranes but provides far more visibility for the crane operator and can drive on normal roads.

It was first invented in the late '70s after an Australian Engineer (Dave Francis) saw a gap in the market. He saw a need for a type of crane that could be a 'pick and carry' crane for extremely heavy equipment and be mobile on a normal road and eliminate the need for additional trucks and equipment. Essentially, it's a cross between a truck and a crane.

BENEFITS OF A FRANNA CRANE

The design allows the positioning of the cab to be at the front of the crane, so the crane does more than lift and carry supplies from side to side; it allows the driver to see ahead and be mobile on both a construction site and on main roads.

Other advantages include:

  • Crane mobility
  • They do not require a lot of space
  • Significantly less setup time
  • Heavy load capacity maintained
  • Extended reach allows for reaching tight spaces
  • It can be used in various settings, including; construction sites, workshops, plant sites and mines
  • Save time on packing down equipment

LIMITATIONS OF A FRANNA CRANE

While the Franna Crane has multiple benefits, it may not always be the crane you need for every job.

  • Maximum carry loads (between 10 to 40 tonnes)
  • Risk of overturning if not driven by an experienced operator
  • Can be limited on surfaces that are not firm

WHAT IS A FRANNA CRANE USED FOR?

Franna cranes are also commonly referred to as "taxi" cranes or "pick and carry" cranes as they are mobile and can move around on a job site.

By transporting heavy equipment and supplies on one machine, you can drastically reduce labour costs and time waiting on external machinery to move more equipment.

Not only can pick and carry crane be used for industrial and construction projects they can also be used on large domestic jobs including:

  • Installation of pools
  • Installation of large water tanks
  • Farming equipment moving
  • Workshops
  • Plant sites
